El Chapo trial for drug trafficking begins in New York 

 

The trial of one of the world's most powerful drug traffickers is due to begin in New York later on Wednesday (NZ time). Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was extradited to the United States last year after twice escaping from prison in Mexico. Prosecutors allege that under his leadership the Sinaloa cartel smuggled vast quantities of drugs into the United States. Brooklyn bridge will be closed while El Chapo is driven from prison to the court. Our correspondent in New York is Nick Harper, he talks to Susie Ferguson.

Before arriving for jury duty on Monday, prospective panel members filled out a lengthy questionnaire that might have given them pause. "The case for which you are summoned involves the defendant JOAQUIN ARCHIVALDO GUZMAN LOERA, also known as 'El Chapo,' " read query No. 48. "Have you read, seen or heard anything about the defendant, the case, or people involved?" It would be hard not to.

Prosecutors detail evidence against ‘El Chapo’

 

The US government released a 90-page memo detailing much of the evidence they plan to use in the trial of drug lord Joaquin Guzman, also known as El Chapo. Among the charges are that he personally interrogated rivals, had them killed, and ordered their bodies burned in a hole in the ground.
